It shows Jesus lying on a couch. The sculpture is very special because of a thin veil. This veil covers his face and his body. It looks like soft, see-through cloth. However, it is actually made of hard stone. This trick makes the art look very real. Many people call it a masterpiece. It is one of the most amazing sculptures in the world. People travel to see how the stone looks like fabric.

Making this statue took incredible skill.

The artist carved everything from one single block of white marble. He had to make the veil look transparent. You can see the face of Jesus through the stone. The artist also showed the pain Jesus felt. You can see this suffering on his face and his body. At the feet of Jesus, the artist carved other items. These include pliers, shackles, and a crown of thorns. Every detail was shaped by hand in the marble.

A man named Raimondo di Sangro started this project. He was a prince of Sansevero in Naples, Italy. He wanted a realistic statue for the Cappella Sansevero. At first, he asked an artist named Antonio Corradini to do the work. Corradini made a small model out of clay. Then, Corradini died before he could finish the marble. The job went to a young sculptor named Giuseppe Sanmartino. Sanmartino finished the masterpiece in 1753. This work helped start his successful career.

There is a famous legend about how the statue was made.

Some people thought the prince used alchemy. Alchemy is a way to try and change things using science. They believed the prince placed real cloth on the statue. Then, they thought he turned the cloth into marble with chemicals. But we know this is not true. Old letters prove the statue is just carved stone. A receipt from December 16, 1752, shows the prince paid Sanmartino for it. The note says the veil is also made of marble.

This statue is a great example of amazing human skill. Even famous artists were amazed by it. A sculptor named Antonio Canova once tried to get the work. He said he would give ten years of his life to make something that good. The statue stays in the Cappella Sansevero in Naples today. It shows how artists can make hard stone look like soft cloth. It remains a wonder for everyone who visits the chapel. The work connects art and history in a beautiful way.
