Veerappan was a bandit in India. He lived in the forests for 36 years. He was a smuggler of sandalwood and ivory. This means he took wood and elephant tusks to sell. He killed about 500 elephants. He also killed many people. These people were often police officers or forest officials.

One very sad event was the Palar blast. In 1993, a bomb killed 22 people. Veerappan also took famous people away. He kidnapped a movie star named Rajkumar. He held him for 108 days. The government had to pay money to free him.

Two states, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, worked to catch him. They formed a Special Task Force. This team searched the woods for a long time. In 2004, the police used a plan called Operation Cocoon. They used an undercover officer to trick Veerappan. They lured him into an ambulance. A gunfight happened, and Veerappan was killed.
