The city's importance grew through specific maritime and geopolitical shifts. In the late 19th century, it was a crucial stopover for ships. These vessels traveled between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They often used the Straits of Magellan to navigate. This era was known as the city's golden age.

International sailors called it the "jewel of the Pacific." Some even referred to it as "Little San Francisco." This growth was driven by the California gold rush between 1848 and 1858. During this time, Valparaíso became a magnet for European immigrants. These settlers arrived from Britain, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Italy.

Valparaíso's history began with indigenous peoples and Spanish explorers. The Picunche natives lived in the Bay of Valparaíso. They were known for their agriculture. In 1536, Spanish explorers arrived on the ship *Santiaguillo*. Juan de Saavedra commanded this expedition. He named the town after his home, Valparaíso de Arriba, in Spain.

Initially, the settlement was a small village. It consisted of only a few houses and a church. During colonial times, the town faced attacks from English pirates. Francis Drake attacked the city in 1578. Richard Hawkins also arrived with his ship, the *Dainty*, in 1594.

The 19th century brought massive infrastructure developments. In 1810, a merchant built Chile's first pier. This helped create the modern commercial center through land reclamation.

Economic shifts changed the city's trajectory in the 20th century. The opening of the Panama Canal in 1914 was a critical event. Shipping traffic moved to the canal to avoid the Straits of Magellan. This caused a decline in the port-based economy. Many wealthy families abandoned the city during this time.

The city also faced natural disasters. A major earthquake struck on August 16, 1906. This event caused extensive property damage and many deaths.

By the 21st century, the port of San Antonio had surpassed Valparaíso in trade volume. This led people to question its title as "Puerto Principal."
