This urban center is the fifth-largest city in Chile. As of the 2024 census, the population reached 401,096 people. Most of these residents live in urban areas.

The city is often called "The Pearl of the North." It acts as a vital service hub for the surrounding mining industries.

The local climate is classified as a cold desert climate. This type of climate is characterized by abundant sunshine and strong maritime influence. The Humboldt Current helps regulate the aridity and water scarcity in the region. A notable feature is the "camanchaca," which is a thick morning fog.

The city is located within the Atacama Desert. This is the driest nonpolar desert on Earth. Antofagasta receives less than 1 millimeter of annual rainfall. This makes it one of the driest towns in the world.

Because the terrain is unique, sporadic heavy rain can cause dangerous mudflows and landslides.

The geography of the area includes several interesting water features. There are about fifteen streams that have watersheds filled with sand and gravel. These are known as "quebradas." Examples include Quebrada El Carrizo and Quebrada Jardines del Sur.

The coastline is mostly rocky and steep. Because of this, there are very few natural beaches. Most of the beaches found in the city are artificial. However, natural beaches do exist just north of the city at La Portada and Las Losetas.

The region also contains several dry lakes, known as salars. These include the Salar de Pajonales and Salar Mar Muerto.

History shows that the territory of Antofagasta was once a subject of dispute. In the 18th century, it was part of the Captaincy General of Chile.

Later, the land was contested between Chile and Bolivia. This tension led to the War of the Pacific, which lasted from 1879 to 1883.

Chile captured the city on 14 February 1879. The conflict was influenced by secret treaties and disagreements over mining taxes. Eventually, the 1904 Treaty of Peace and Friendship was signed. This treaty established a permanent border between Chile and Bolivia.

Economic development in Antofagasta is driven primarily by mining. In the past, silver and saltpeter were the most important minerals. Saltpeter, or nitratine, was found in the Salar del Carmen field. Since the mid-19th century, copper mining has become the most critical industry.

This industry fueled massive growth in construction, retail, and hotels. This boom lasted until 2013. Since the 2010s, the city has also become a service hub for lithium mining.

The city's wealth is reflected in its economy. In 2012, Antofagasta had the highest GDP per capita in Chile at US$37,000. It also ranked third in the Human Development Index.

Antofagasta is a significant center for education and law. It is a university city that hosts two major institutions. These are the Catholic University of the North and the University of Antofagasta.

The city is also the seat of one of Chile's three environmental courts. For travelers, the Tropic of Capricorn Monument is a key landmark.

This monument was opened in 2000 and functions as a solar calendar. The urban area is also near the Cerro Moreno International Airport.

The city also maintains a connection to local nature through urban wetlands. These wetlands provide habitats for native reptiles and arthropods. Birds like the Calidris and mammals like the culpeo fox also visit these areas.

However, these ecosystems face challenges from garbage and water extraction. The municipality plans to declare these official urban wetlands to protect them. This protection is part of a broader effort to manage the delicate desert environment. Antofagasta remains a complex mix of industrial power and natural wonder.
