He played for Dynamo Kyiv for seven years. During his career in the Soviet Top League, he scored 71 goals in 253 games.

Lobanovskyi transformed football through a scientific approach to coaching. He worked with a scientist named Anatoly Zelentsov. Together, they used mathematical modeling of physical load. This system helped them calculate the exact physical strain on players.

He also developed a tactical style where any outfield player could take over another's role. This style placed a heavy emphasis on pressing the opponent. His methods were often described as rationalism. He focused on the training process to ensure peak performance.

His coaching career at Dynamo Kyiv produced incredible results. He established the club as the dominant force in Soviet football. He won the Soviet Top League eight times. He also won the Soviet Cup six times during a 16-year period. In 1975, his team won the Cup Winners' Cup. They defeated Ferencváros 3–0 in the final.

Lobanovskyi achieved success on the international stage as well. He managed the Soviet Union national football team. He led them to the finals of Euro 1988. The team lost to the Netherlands in that tournament. He also won a bronze medal at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games.

In 1975, he and partner Oleh Bazylevych won the World Sports Coach of the Year award. They were a powerful duo in the mid-1970s.

He was a master at developing world-class talent. Lobanovskyi coached three different players to win the Ballon d'Or. These players were Oleg Blokhin, Igor Belanov, and Andriy Shevchenko.

In his third stint with Dynamo Kyiv, he led them to the 1998 Champions League quarter-finals. His team topped a group containing FC Barcelona, Newcastle United, and PSV Eindhoven. They famously beat Barcelona 3–0 in Kyiv and 4–0 at Camp Nou. This era showed his lasting impact on the sport.

His legacy is defined by unmatched trophies and records. According to FourFourTwo, he was the most successful manager of the 20th century. He won 30 trophies by the year 2000. He is the only manager to win a major European competition with an Eastern European club twice. He also won the Ukrainian championship five times out of five. No other manager has matched that perfect record. His influence remains a cornerstone of football history.
