Blokhin's extraordinary athletic ability was rooted in his family history. His mother, Kateryna Adamenko, was a multiple champion in the USSR for the pentathlon, sprinting, and long jump. His father, Vladimir Blokhin, was a competitive sprinter and a police officer. This athletic heritage allowed Oleg to master sprinting at a very young age. By the age of 16, he could run 100 meters in 11.0 seconds. This explosive pace became his most dangerous weapon on the football pitch.

During his playing career, Blokhin established numerous records that still stand today. He spent 18 years at Dynamo Kyiv, making a total of 582 appearances for the club. He remains the all-time top goalscorer for Dynamo Kyiv with 266 goals. He also holds the record for the most goals in the history of the Soviet Top League with 211 goals. For the Soviet Union national team, he scored 42 goals and earned 112 caps. He was the only player to be capped over 100 times for the Soviet Union.

His trophy cabinet reflects his dominance in European football. With Dynamo Kyiv, he won eight Soviet league titles and five national cups. He also secured two European Cup Winners' Cups, scoring a goal in each final. In 1975, Blokhin won the Ballon d'Or, which names the best player in Europe. He was the second Soviet player and the first Ukrainian player to receive this honor. He also won the Soviet Footballer of the Year award three times and the Ukrainian Footballer of the Year award nine times.

Blokhin competed on the world's largest stages throughout his career. He represented the Soviet Union at the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games. He also played in the 1982 and 1986 FIFA World Cups, scoring one goal in each tournament. Later in his career, he became one of the first Soviet players to play abroad. He signed with Vorwärts Steyr in Austria in 1988 and later played for Aris in Cyprus.

After retiring from playing, Blokhin transitioned into a significant managerial career. He coached several Greek clubs, including Olympiacos, where he won the Greek Cup and Super Cup in 1992. He also managed PAOK, AEK Athens, and Ionikos. He served two separate terms as the head coach of the Ukraine national team. In 2006, he led Ukraine to the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup in Germany. This was a historic achievement, as it was the first time Ukraine qualified for a major tournament as an independent nation.

Blokhin's influence extended into the political sphere as well. In 1998, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada, which is the parliament of Ukraine. He served a second term in the parliament starting in March 2002. Throughout his life, he has been recognized as a pillar of his nation's culture. In 2011, he was named one of the "legends of Ukrainian football" at the Victory of Football awards. His legacy continues through his family, including his daughter Iryna, a singer who performed the anthem for UEFA Euro 2012.
