His career spanned comedies, dramas, action adventures, westerns, historical films, crime dramas, science fiction, and fantasy. He was a leading man who appeared in films that grossed more than $3.85 billion worldwide. In 1992, film critic Roger Ebert called him a highly talented, though often unsung, leading man of his generation. Kilmer's work was characterized by deep preparation and a wide range of characters. He was equally comfortable on the Broadway stage as he was in major Hollywood blockbusters.

Kilmer used specific methods to prepare for his complex roles. For the 1991 film The Doors, he portrayed singer Jim Morrison. He memorized all of Morrison's lyrics before his audition and studied the singer's poetry. He spent nearly a year dressing like Morrison and visiting the singer's former hangouts on the Sunset Strip. In the 1993 western Tombstone, he played Doc Holliday. To prepare for a scene where the character performs Chopin's Nocturne in E minor, Kilmer practiced that specific piano piece for several months. This dedication helped him inhabit characters with great authenticity.

His film career included several distinct types of roles that showcased his range. He began with comedic roles in Top Secret! (1984) and Real Genius (1985). In Top Secret!, he played a rock and roll star named Nick Rivers and even released an album under that name. He then transitioned into action and fantasy roles, such as Iceman in Top Gun (1986) and Madmartigan in Willow (1988). He also tackled iconic superhero roles, most notably playing Bruce Wayne/Batman in Batman Forever (1995). Later, he moved into more serious crime dramas, such as the acclaimed film Heat (1995).

Kilmer's journey began with classical training and early stage work. He was born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, California. He was the second of three sons born to Gladys Swanette and Eugene Dorris Kilmer. He attended Chatsworth High School and later became the youngest person accepted into the Juilliard School's Drama Division. At Juilliard, he was a member of Group 10. His early professional years included off-Broadway appearances in The Slab Boys (1983) and performances of Shakespearean plays at The Public Theater.

His success in the film industry was measured by significant financial and cultural impact. The film Top Gun grossed over $344 million worldwide, which established him as a major star. His 1997 action film The Saint was also a financial success, earning $169.4 million globally. Throughout his career, Kilmer maintained a high level of visibility in both independent and big-budget productions. Even when working on smaller projects, such as the film Joe the King (1999), he continued to build a diverse professional reputation.

Some of his roles remain particularly notable in film history. His portrayal of Jim Morrison was so convincing that members of the band The Doors found it difficult to distinguish his voice from Morrison's. In the film The Saint, he played a master of disguise, playing characters like a Russian mob boss and a nerdy scientist. He also showcased his vocal range by voicing both Moses and God in the animated film The Prince of Egypt (1998).

In the later years of his life, Kilmer faced significant health challenges that changed his life. In 2015, he was diagnosed with throat cancer. During his treatment, he underwent chemotherapy and two tracheotomies. A tracheal procedure also damaged his vocal cords, which made it difficult for him to speak easily. He chose to share these personal struggles with the public through his 2020 memoir, I'm Your Huckleberry, and his 2021 documentary, Val. He died of pneumonia on April 1, 2025, at the age of 65.
