John Henry Holliday, known as Doc Holliday, was a complex figure in American history.

He lived several different lives as a dentist, a gambler, and a gunfighter. He is most famous for his close friendship with the lawman Wyatt Earp. Their partnership is a major part of the legends of the American Old West. While many stories claim he was a prolific killer, modern researchers tell a different story. They believe he actually killed only between one and three men during his lifetime.

Holliday's early life was shaped by education and family tragedy. He was born in 1851 in Griffin, Georgia. His father was a major in the 27th Georgia Infantry during the American Civil War. When Holliday was 15, his mother died from tuberculosis. This was the same disease that had killed his sister before she was born. After studying at the Valdosta Institute, he moved to Philadelphia to pursue a career in medicine. On March 1, 1872, he earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery.

His career as a dentist began in Georgia and later moved to Atlanta and Dallas. In Dallas, Holliday and a partner named Dr. John A. Seegar performed very high-quality work. They won three awards at the Dallas County Fair for their dental skill. These awards included prizes for the best set of teeth in gold and the best set in vulcanized rubber. However, his professional life changed due to his health. Holliday was diagnosed with tuberculosis, a serious disease that affects the lungs. Doctors suggested that a warmer, drier climate might slow the progression of the illness.

To find relief, Holliday moved toward the American Southwest. This move led him to embrace gambling as his main way to earn money. He worked as a faro dealer in several frontier towns. He lived in Denver, Colorado, and Cheyenne, Wyoming, and even traveled to Deadwood, South Dakota, during a gold rush.

During this time, he also had a well-known relationship with a woman named Mary Katharine "Big Nose Kate" Horony. She was known for being a tough and independent person.

Holliday's path crossed with Wyatt Earp in a Texas saloon. During a confrontation in the saloon, Holliday helped save Earp's life. This event started a long and famous friendship. The two men traveled together through Las Vegas, New Mexico, and Prescott, Arizona.

In 1881, they arrived in Tombstone, Arizona. While in Tombstone, Holliday was deputized by the city marshal, Virgil Earp. This led to his involvement in the famous shootout at the O.K. Corral on October 26, 1881.

The violence in Tombstone had serious consequences for the Earp brothers. After the shootout, Morgan Earp was killed and Virgil Earp was wounded. Wyatt Earp then became a deputy U.S. marshal and formed a federal posse. Holliday joined this posse to pursue the outlaw group known as the Cochise County Cowboys. During this period of pursuit, the posse killed three members of the Cowboys in early 1882. Because of these events, a local sheriff issued a warrant for the arrest of the posse members, including Holliday.

Holliday eventually sought refuge in the Colorado Territory. Wyatt Earp helped arrange for the Colorado Governor, Frederick Walker Pitkin, to deny an extradition request for him. This allowed Holliday to live out his final years in Colorado. He died of tuberculosis in his bed at the Hotel Glenwood. He was only 36 years old when he passed away on November 8, 1887.
