Väinö Linna was a very important writer from Finland.

He was born in Urjala in 1920. His life was not always easy. His father died when Väinö was only seven years old. His mother worked at a manor to support the family. As a young boy, Väinö loved reading adventure books from the library. He only went to public school for six years. Later, he worked as a lumberjack and a farm hand. He also worked at the Finlayson textile mills in Tampere. These hard jobs helped shape his view of the world.

During the Second World War, Linna served as a soldier.

He fought on the eastern front during the Continuation War from 1941 to 1944. While he was a squad leader, he wrote notes about his experiences. He wanted to show what life was like for ordinary soldiers. At first, he tried to publish these notes, but they were rejected. He even burned them because of this failure. However, he did not give up on his goal. He later used those ideas to write his most famous novel. This book was called *The Unknown Soldier*, and it was published in 1954.

Writing became Linna's main job after the war.

His first two books did not sell very well. His third book, *The Unknown Soldier*, changed everything. It sold 175,000 copies in just six months. This was a huge number for a Finnish book in the 1950s. Some critics were harsh about his work at first. They thought his stories were too much like "boy's books." But the public loved his realistic characters. He also wrote a famous trilogy called *Under the North Star*. This set of three books was released between 1959 and 1963.

Linna received many honors for his great writing.

His third book in the trilogy won the Nordic Council's Literature Prize. He also won the Johannes Linnankoski Prize in 1958. In 1960, he won the Aleksis Kivi Prize. He was given the State Prize for Literature in 1960 and 1961. Even though he had no higher education, he became an academician in 1980. He also received an honorary doctorate from the University of Tampere in 1965. These awards showed how much people respected his talent and his stories.

Today, Väinö Linna is a part of Finland's national legacy.

Many people in Finland use his famous quotes in daily life. His books have been turned into movies many times. For example, *The Unknown Soldier* was first made into a film in 1955. *Under the North Star* was also made into a film in 1968. Linna's picture was even on the 20 markka banknote. A square in Tampere is named after him to honor his life. His realistic way of writing changed how people tell stories about their own history.
