The city has an average elevation of 100 metres. It serves as a major commercial and industrial center for the prefecture.

The climate in Utsunomiya is classified as humid subtropical. This means the city experiences hot, humid summers and cool winters. The average annual temperature is 14.3 °C. August is typically the warmest month, with temperatures averaging 26.0 °C. January is the coldest month, with temperatures averaging 2.8 °C. The city receives an average annual rainfall of 1,524.7 mm. September is usually the wettest month of the year.

Utsunomiya has a very long history of human settlement. Archaeologists have found evidence of people living here since the Paleolithic period. Many burial mounds from the Kofun period are located within city borders. The Utsunomiya Futarasan Shrine claims to have been founded in 353 AD. The town originally developed around this important shrine. During the Heian through Sengoku periods, the Utsunomiya clan controlled the area. Later, the area was ruled by various daimyō clans under the Utsunomiya Domain. The city prospered because it sat at the junction of the Nikkō Kaidō and the Ōshū Kaidō roads.

Modern history brought significant changes and challenges to the city. During the Boshin War, the Battle of Utsunomiya Castle was a major conflict. Following the Meiji restoration, Utsunomiya was briefly its own prefecture. It was later merged into Tochigi Prefecture and became the capital in 1884. The town was officially established in 1889. By the end of that year, it was the third most populous municipality in the Kantō area. Utsunomiya was raised to city status in 1896. However, the city suffered during World War II. Much of the area was destroyed during the American bombing of Utsunomiya on July 12, 1945.

Today, Utsunomiya is a large and growing urban center. As of July 1, 2023, the estimated population was 513,584. The city covers a total area of 416.85 km2. This results in a population density of 1,232 persons per square kilometre. The Greater Utsunomiya metropolitan area had a population of 888,005 in the year 2000. The city is the 10th most populated city in the Kantō region. The city government uses a mayor-council form of government. This includes a directly elected mayor and a 45-member legislature.

The city is world-famous for its gyoza, which are pan-fried dumplings. This culinary tradition began after the Second World War. Japanese soldiers returned from Manchuria with gyoza recipes from China. They began opening dumpling restaurants throughout the city. The Utsunomiya Gyoza Association was created in 1990 to celebrate this popularity. There are now more than two hundred gyoza restaurants in the city. A 1.5-metre tall gyoza statue stands near the JR station. The city also hosts an annual Gyoza Dumplings Festival at the Castle Ruins Park.

Utsunomiya is a vital hub for transportation and industry. The city is home to Honda design centers and a Canon optical manufacturing plant. The Kiyohara Industrial Park also hosts various industrial concerns. For travel, the Tohoku Shinkansen high-speed line connects the city to Tokyo.
