Shizuoka is a major capital city in central Japan.

It serves as the administrative center for Shizuoka Prefecture. The city is located along the Tōkaidō Corridor. This corridor sits roughly halfway between Tokyo and Nagoya. To the south, the city borders Suruga Bay. To the north, the Minami Alps mountains rise up. The city's name is derived from two Japanese kanji characters. One character, shizu, means "still" or "calm." The second character, oka, means "hill(s)."

The physical landscape was shaped by powerful natural forces. The Shizuoka Plain and the Miho Peninsula have a distinct fan-like shape. This formation occurred over many ages through the action of the Abe River. The river flowed quickly and carried collapsed sand and earth downstream. These deposits created the foundations for the modern city. A prominent feature is Mount Kunō. This isolated mountain separates the Suruga coastline from the Shimizu coastline.

Shizuoka experiences a humid subtropical climate. This is known scientifically as the Köppen climate classification Cfa. The summers are typically hot and humid. Winters are mild and rarely see snow. The city is located near the warm Kuroshio Current. This proximity makes the area quite wet by Japanese standards. However, it is also the sunniest of Japan's major cities. This is because it lacks summer fog. It is also sheltered from northwesterly winds from the Sea of Japan.

Human history in this region stretches back to prehistoric times. Archaeological evidence, such as the Toro site, shows a major Yayoi period settlement existed here. During the Nara period, the area was known as the Suruga province. A capital named Sunpu was established on the banks of the Abe River. The city saw significant political shifts during the Muromachi period. It served as the capital for the Imagawa clan before being ruled by leaders like Takeda Shingen and Tokugawa Ieyasu. In 1606, Ieyasu retired to Sunpu to establish a secondary court.

The modern city underwent several major changes in the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1869, the name changed from Sunpu to Shizuoka. The modern city was officially founded on April 1, 1889. It was one of the first 31 cities established in Japan. The city has faced several natural and man-made challenges. A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck in 1935. Heavy rains caused the Abe River to flood in 1914 and 1974. Additionally, a major firebombing raid occurred on June 19, 1945.
