The origins of Sumy trace back to the 1650s. Historians debate whether the city was founded in 1652 or 1655. It was established by the Cossack Herasym Kondratyev on the banks of the Psel River. By the 1656–1658 period, a city fort and a grad, or town, were constructed under the leadership of the Muscovite voivode K. Arsenyev. During the 1670s, the settlement expanded to include a fortified posad, which is a town for craftsmen. This expansion made Sumy the largest fortress in Sloboda Ukraine.
