History shows that the borders of this region have shifted often. During the Soviet administrative reforms from 1923 to 1929, the Kharkov Governorate was abolished. This left behind five okruhas, which are smaller administrative districts. These included Okhtyrka, Izium, Kupiansk, Sumy, and Kharkiv. The modern Kharkiv Oblast was officially established on 27 February 1932. Since then, several territories have moved to other provinces. Some land joined Donetsk Oblast in 1932. Other parts moved to Chernihiv, Poltava, and Sumy Oblasts between 1932 and 1939. The region also experienced the tragic Holodomor famine.
