It serves as the most important industrial region for the entire country. The oblast covers an area of 31,974 square kilometers. This represents about 5.3% of the total land area of Ukraine. Most of the territory sits in eastern Ukraine. However, parts of the region extend into central and southern Ukraine. The Dnieper River flows through the heart of the oblast.

This river has shaped the geography and history of the area for centuries.

The geography of the region is defined by distinct landforms. About half of the territory lies within the Black Sea Lowland. This lowland area is located specifically on the west bank of the Dnieper. The Dnieper Upland also covers part of the region. This upland area contains many valuable minerals. These include iron, manganese, granite, and graphite. People also find brown coal and kaolin in the earth here. In Terny, there is a special feature called the Terniv meteorite crater. This crater is estimated to be 280 million years old. It dates back to the Permian period. The crater is not exposed at the surface.

The geological structure is quite complex and varied. Much of the oblast sits within the boundaries of the Ukrainian Shield. Some northern and eastern parts belong to the Dnipro-Donets depression. The rocks in the region come from many different eras. These include the Archaean, Proterozoic, Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic periods. These layers tell a long story of the Earth's history. The presence of the Ukrainian Shield makes the area geologically significant. These deep layers provide the minerals that drive the local economy.

History shows that this land has seen many different cultures. Slavic settlements first appeared on the Dnieper banks between the 6th and 8th centuries AD. During the period of Kievan Rus', the Dnieper was a major trade corridor. It was part of the famous route "from the Varangians to the Greeks." This path connected the Baltic Sea to Constantinople.

Later, the region became known as the "Wild Fields." This name came from periods of fighting and depopulation. The Zaporozhian Cossacks, who were armed free men, became a dominant force. In 1635, the Polish government built the Kodak fortress to control Cossack activity. This fort was eventually captured by Cossacks in 1648.

Industrial development changed the region's landscape significantly. The Kryvbas is a major economic region located in the southwest. It specializes in iron ore mining and the steel industry. It is considered the main iron ore region of Eastern Europe. The city of Kryvyi Rih is a central part of this mining base. It is actually the longest city in Europe when measured in a straight line.

Large mining companies were founded in the mid-20th century to exploit ore deposits. In 1874, a railway project was initiated by Emperor Alexander II. This railway allowed for the direct transport of materials to factories. This development greatly increased the speed of regional growth.

The administrative history of the oblast involves many changes. It was officially created on February 27, 1932. Before this, the territory was part of different governorates. The city of Dnipro was once known as Yekaterinoslav. It was founded in 1776 by Prince Grigori Potemkin.

In 1926, the city was renamed Dnipropetrovsk. Recently, the city was renamed Dnipro in 2016 due to decommunization laws. There have been formal proposals to rename the entire oblast to Sicheslav Oblast. This name would honor the history of the Zaporozhian Sich. However, the renaming process has faced many delays.

Today, the oblast remains a densely populated and active area. About 80% of the population lives in major administrative centers. These centers include Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Kamianske, Nikopol, and Pavlohrad.

The region is divided into seven raions, which are administrative districts. It contains 20 cities and 1,438 villages. The local administration is managed by the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Rada. Despite facing challenges during the Russian invasion, the oblast remains a key part of Ukraine. It continues to play a massive role in the nation's industry and identity.
