Zaporizhzhia Oblast is a significant administrative region located in southeast Ukraine.

It covers a total area of 27,183 square kilometers. This region serves as a vital hub for both heavy industry and large-scale agriculture. The administrative center is the city of Zaporizhzhia. Historically and economically, the oblast plays a major role in the country's development. However, the region is currently affected by the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The geography of the oblast is defined by a primarily flat landscape. Most of the territory is covered in chernozem, which is a type of very fertile, dark soil. This soil makes the region excellent for intensive farming and land reclamation projects. The topography is not entirely uniform, however. It consists of two distinct geomorphological parts. One part includes the outskirts of the Azov and Dnipro uplands. These areas correspond to the southeastern part of the Ukrainian crystalline massif. The other part includes the coastal Pryazov and Black Sea plains. These plains are located within the Black Sea basin.

Different elevations create a varied terrain across the region. The highest area is the central-eastern Azov Upland. This upland extends eastward to meet the Donetsk ridge in the Donetsk Oblast. To the south, a coastal plain sits between the Azov Upland and the Sea of Azov. This plain eventually flows into the Black Sea west of the Molochna River. The northeastern end of this plain merges with the Zaporizhzhia inner plain. This inner plain borders the southeastern edges of the Dnieper Upland. These features help scientists understand the structural history of the Earth's crust.

The history of this land stretches back to antiquity. The Greek historian Herodotus referred to this area as the land of Gerrhos. It was famously known as the burial place for the kings of the Royal Scythians. Over many centuries, various empires and groups have controlled the territory. These include the Khazars, the Mongol Empire, Lithuania, and the Crimean Khanate. The region was also ruled by Poland and Russia at different times. A notable historical site is the island of Khortytsia in the Dnieper River. This island served as a former fortress for the Zaporozhian Cossacks.

Demographically, the oblast has a diverse population. According to the 2001 census, there were 1,929,171 residents. About 70.8% of the people identified as Ukrainians. Roughly 24.7% identified as Russians. Other groups include Bulgarians, Belarusians, and others. The region is currently facing major changes due to military conflict. Since February 2022, Russian forces have occupied the southern portion of the oblast. This includes the cities of Melitopol, Berdiansk, and Enerhodar. Enerhodar is a critical location because it houses the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

While much of the south is occupied, the capital city of Zaporizhzhia remains under Ukrainian administration.

Education and scientific research are highly valued in the region. There are hundreds of schools and many higher education institutions. The Zaporizhzhia National University and the Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic are major centers for students.

There are even specialized programs like the Small Academy of Science for young learners. This academy allows children to study disciplines like physics, chemistry, and biology. The region's connection to science is so strong that the International Astronomical Union has named two minor planets after scientists from this oblast. These planets are named 5936 Khadzhinov and 19082 Vikchernov.

Economic activity in the oblast is diverse and complex. Before the 2022 invasion, the region was a major contributor to the national economy. In 2016, the gross regional product (GRP) was 104,323 million ₴. This represented 4.4% of the total GRP of Ukraine. The region also includes important recreational areas. For example, Kyrylivka was a well-known resort town on the coast.

Today, the region's economy and geography remain deeply connected to its industrial capacity and its unique position near the Sea of Azov.
