Before these ships, most warships were made of wood. Wood could not stop the powerful new shells used in battle. Because of this, the world needed a new way to protect ships. The Monitor showed everyone that metal armor could change naval warfare forever.

The ship had a very unusual design.

The most famous part was a large, round gun turret. This turret sat in the middle of the ship. It could spin in a full circle using steam engines.

This meant the guns could point in any direction. The ship was also very low in the water. This made it a small target for enemies to hit. Some people even joked that it looked like a "cheesebox on a raft."

A Swedish-born engineer named John Ericsson designed the ship.

He worked very fast to finish the project. The ship was built in just 101 days in Brooklyn, New York.

The Union Navy needed it quickly because of a threat. They heard the Confederates were building an iron ship named Virginia. A woman named Mary Louvestre even risked her safety to bring this news to the Navy. Her message helped leaders decide to speed up the Monitor's construction.

The Monitor saw its most famous action on March 9, 1862.

Neither ship could destroy the other during the battle. This was the first time two armored ships fought each other. It was a major turning point for ships around the world. Lieutenant John L. Worden was the commander of the Monitor during this fight.

After its famous battle, the Monitor had a difficult journey. In December 1862, it was being pulled by another ship during a storm.
