A user interface is the space where people and machines meet.

The goal is to make machines easy and fun to use. This is called usability. A good design helps you get results with very little work.

Interfaces use different layers to work. One layer is the human-machine interface, or HMI. This part connects people to hardware. You might use a mouse or a keyboard to give input. The machine then gives output through a screen or speakers.

Some interfaces use many senses at once. These are called composite user interfaces. A graphical user interface, or GUI, uses sight and touch.

If you add sound, it becomes a multimedia user interface.

In the past, interfaces were very hard to use. From 1945 to 1968, people used batch interfaces. They had to use punched cards to give data to computers.
