An operating system is the main software that runs a computer. It helps the machine do many jobs at once. It also lets many people use one computer together.

Work on Unix began in 1969 at Bell Labs. Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie were two key people. In 1973, they rewrote it using the C language. This made Unix portable. This means it can run on many different types of machines.

Unix follows a special way of thinking. This is called the Unix philosophy. It uses many small, simple tools. Each tool does just one job. You can link these tools together using pipes. A pipe is a way to send data from one tool to another.

This lets small parts do very big tasks.

At the center of the system is the kernel. The kernel is the master part of the system. It manages the files and tells programs when to run.
