POSIX

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Computers use different systems to run. These systems are called operating systems. Sometimes, it is hard for programs to work on every system. POSIX is a set of rules that helps solve this. It is a family of standards. A standard is a set of rules that everyone agrees to follow.

These rules help different systems stay compatible. Compatibility means they can work together easily. POSIX tells developers how to make tools. It defines how to use a command-line shell. This is a way to talk to a computer using text. It also defines a threading library. A library is a collection of code that helps programs do tasks.

Many systems follow these rules. Some are called Unix-like systems. Even systems that were not made like Unix can follow them. The Austin Group makes these rules. They work together to keep the standards new. They create a version called the Single UNIX Specification. This helps people write software that runs on many machines. It makes technology work much better for everyone.
