Computers need ways to talk to each other. They use a tool called an API. API stands for application programming interface.

It is a set of rules for software. These rules help different programs share services.

Think of an API like building blocks. You can join different pieces to make something new. This is called integration. An API works like a contract. It is an agreement between two sides. One side offers a service. The other side uses it.

An API helps hide how a system works inside. It only shows the parts a programmer needs. This makes coding much easier. For example, a weather sensor has an API. A program sends a request to the sensor. This is called an API call. The sensor then sends back a weather report. This report is called an API response.

APIs have been around for a long time. Scientists worked on these ideas in the 1940s. Today, many APIs work over the internet. These are called web APIs. They help the whole internet stay connected.
