We call these words source code. Humans can read source code easily. It is just plain text. But a computer cannot read it yet. A computer needs instructions in its own language. This is called machine code.

A special program helps with this change. One way is using a compiler. A compiler translates the code all at once. This makes the program fast. Another way is using an interpreter. An interpreter translates the code as it runs. This is often much slower.

Programmers often add notes to their work. These are called comments. They help other people understand the plan. The computer just skips over them.

Source code is very useful for sharing. You can write code once. Then you can move it to different machines. This is called portability. It is easier than moving machine code. People also use code to share ideas. Some people even think of code as art. Writing good code helps make software that is easy to fix later.
