Some galaxies look like big, spinning swirls.

These are called unbarred spiral galaxies. They do not have a bar in the center. A bar is a long shape of stars.

Most spiral galaxies have this bar. But one third of them do not.

Scientists use special ways to group galaxies. One way is the Hubble sequence. This system uses the letters SA for unbarred spirals. It uses SB for barred spirals. Another scientist named de Vaucouleurs added more types. He found a middle type called SAB. These have some features of both.

Unbarred galaxies can look many ways. Some have arms that are tightly wound. Others have arms that are loose.

The Triangulum Galaxy is a famous example. These galaxies are often older than barred ones. They can be very big. They range from 20,000 to 100,000 light-years across. Smaller galaxies are less likely to have a bar. This helps us learn how galaxies change over time.
