Flocculent spiral galaxy

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some galaxies look very soft and patchy. We call these flocculent spiral galaxies. The word flocculent means "fluffy."

Most spiral galaxies have long, clear arms. We call those "grand design" spirals. But flocculent galaxies are different. Their arms are not in long lines. Instead, they look broken and patchy.

Why do they look this way? Scientists think it is due to self-propagating star formation. This is a way where new stars make more stars. One group of stars makes new ones nearby. This creates many small, patchy shapes.

About 30 percent of all spiral galaxies are flocculent. Only 10 percent are grand design spirals. The rest are called multi-armed spirals. Some people put multi-armed spirals in the flocculent group. One famous example is the galaxy NGC 2841.

There are many of these galaxies to study. You can find them in many parts of space. Some are in the constellation Eridanus. Others are in the constellation Leo.
