Field galaxy

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most star groups live in big crowds. They stay in large groups or clusters. But some star groups are different. These are called field galaxies.

They float in space all by themselves. They do not belong to a larger group. Because of this, they are gravitationally alone. This means no other big group pulls on them. About 80% of galaxies near our Milky Way live in groups. Most field galaxies have low surface brightness. This means they do not look very bright. Many field galaxies are spiral galaxies. A spiral galaxy is a group of stars in a swirl shape.

One field galaxy is NGC 1313. People call it the Topsy Turvy Galaxy. It has an uneven shape.

Another one is NGC 6503. It is in the Draco constellation. People call it the Lost-In-Space galaxy. It sits next to the Local Void. A void is a large empty spot in space. These lonely galaxies are very special to study.
