Field galaxy

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most star groups live in big crowds. They stay in large groups or clusters. But some star groups are different. These are called field galaxies.

They float in space all by themselves. They do not belong to a larger group. Because of this, they are gravitationally alone. This means no other big group pulls on them. About 80% of galaxies near our Milky Way live in groups.

Field galaxies are very special to study.

How does a field galaxy work? It works by staying away from other big groups. Most galaxies stay close to others in clusters. Field galaxies do not have that pull from neighbors. They sit in the empty parts of space. Many of these galaxies have low surface brightness. This means they do not look very bright.

Most field galaxies are a type called spiral galaxies. A spiral galaxy has a shape like a swirl. This is known as the Sb Hubble-type.

Scientists study these galaxies to learn about space. They look at how galaxies are spread out. They use books like "An Introduction to Galaxies and Cosmology." This book is by David J. Adams and others. They also look at data from many studies. One study was in the journal Astronomische Nachrichten. It was written by K.-H. Schmidt, Petra Böhm, and Hans Elsässer.

They wrote about the emptiness of voids. This helps us see where galaxies live.

There are many named field galaxies to find. NGC 1313 is in the Reticulum constellation. It is nicknamed the "Topsy Turvy Galaxy." It has an uneven shape.

NGC 2683 is in the Lynx constellation. NGC 2903 is in the Leo constellation. NGC 404 is in Andromeda. NGC 3115 is in Sextans. NGC 3621 is in Hydra. NGC 4136 is in Coma Berenices. NGC 4605 is in Ursa Major. NGC 5068 is in Virgo.

Some galaxies have very cool names. NGC 6503 is in the Draco constellation. It is called the "Lost-In-Space galaxy." This is because it sits next to the Local Void. A void is a huge empty spot.

It is like a quiet room in a loud house. Most galaxies are in the loud crowds. Field galaxies are the quiet ones. They help us map the whole sky.
