Unbarred spiral galaxy

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Space is filled with many different shapes of galaxies. One special kind is the unbarred spiral galaxy.

These galaxies look like spinning disks with beautiful arms. Unlike other spirals, they do not have a central bar. A bar is a long shape of stars in the middle.

Unbarred spirals are marked with the letters SA. They make up about one third of all known spiral galaxies. This type of galaxy is very important for studying space.

Scientists use several ways to group these shapes.

In 1926, Edwin Hubble created the Hubble sequence. He divided spirals into unbarred (SA) and barred (SB) types. He also looked at how tight the arms were. Some arms are wound tightly and others are loose.

Later, Gérard de Vaucouleurs added more detail in 1959. He found a middle type called SAB. These intermediate galaxies share features of both SA and SB types. He also looked at how arms start from a ring.

We can learn a lot by looking at galaxy sizes.

Spiral galaxies can be 20,000 light-years wide. Some are even over 100,000 light-years wide. Smaller galaxies are less likely to have a stable bar. This means they are often unbarred. Unbarred galaxies also tend to be older than barred ones. They often have a higher redshift. This tells us they might be an earlier stage of life.

There are many famous examples to find in the sky.

The Triangulum Galaxy is a very close unbarred spiral. Another example is the galaxy NGC 3169. You can also look at Messier 81. Some galaxies are even more unique, like Magellanic spirals. These are called Sm or Sd types. They might only have one single spiral arm.

Even lenticular galaxies can be unbarred. An example of an unbarred lenticular is AM 0644-741.

The ratio of unbarred to barred galaxies has fallen over time. This means the universe changes its look. Looking at these galaxies is like looking at history. We see how galaxies evolve from one stage to another. It is like watching a slow dance in the stars. Each shape tells a story about the past.

Every spiral helps us understand the big picture.
