A man named William Lassell found it in 1851. He found it at the same time as another moon named Ariel. Umbriel is made mostly of ice. It also has a lot of rock. It might have a rocky core in its center. This core would be covered by a thick layer of ice.

The surface of Umbriel is very dark. It is the darkest moon of Uranus. Many space rocks have hit it over a long time. These hits made many holes called craters. Umbriel has more craters than most other moons there. One large crater is named Wokolo. It is 208 kilometers wide. Another crater is named Wunda. It has a bright ring on its floor.

We only saw Umbriel up close one time. The Voyager 2 spacecraft flew past it in 1986. This mission helped us map part of the moon. We saw canyons and dark patches on the surface too. These shapes might come from activity deep inside the moon long ago.
