Ukrainian has a long and deep history. It grew from an old way of speaking called Old East Slavic. This language was used in the land of Kievan Rus. Over many centuries, the language changed. It grew into its own form. In the past, some rulers tried to ban the language in schools. Even so, people kept using it. It stayed very strong in Western Ukraine.
