These islands sit in the north-eastern part of the sea. They are located near the Mangyshlak Bay. This area is west of the Mangyshlak Peninsula. The islands belong to the Mangystau Region of Kazakhstan. The name Tyuleniy actually means "seal." This name comes from the Caspian seal. These animals used to visit the shores often.

The islands have different shapes and sizes. Kulaly Island is the longest island in the group. It is also the westernmost island. This island has many inlets and headlands. It is the only place where people live. A Kazakh border guard and a lighthouse stay there.

Morskoy Island is the second largest island. It is mostly made of wetlands. Rybachy Island is long and narrow. It sits south of Morskoy Island. Podgornyy Island is located to the northeast of Rybachy.

Learning about these islands started a long time ago. Fedor Ivanovich Soimonov led a special trip in 1719. This was called the Caspian Expedition. He and his team studied the sea until 1727. They were the first to map the islands accurately. This helped people understand where the islands sat. Early maps only showed some of the islands. For example, one old map only named Kulaly. This shows how much we have learned since then.

The land on the islands is quite dry. Most of the ground is sandy and desert-like. There is not much grass growing there. Some areas are waterlogged and covered in reeds. Novyy Island is the island furthest to the east. It sits between the other islands and the mainland. This island has changed its shape over time. Recent pictures show it has eroded heavily since 2009. This means the water has worn the land away.

These islands are a very important home for animals. The area is a National Protected Zone. It is also called an Important Bird Area. Many birds come here to nest and live. You can find large groups of seagulls. Other birds include coots, wild ducks, and swans. You might also see egrets and waders. The Sandwich tern also uses these islands to breed. The islands help keep these living things safe.
