Many things must happen to make a typhoon. The ocean water must be very warm. There must also be high humidity, which means much moisture in the air. The storm needs a low pressure center to grow. It also needs low wind shear. Wind shear is when wind changes speed or direction at different heights.

Typhoons can happen any month of the year. Most form between June and November. They often move toward the west or northwest. The Philippines feels many of these storms. China and Japan are also hit. Some storms are even called super typhoons. These have very high wind speeds. Experts in Japan and Hong Kong watch them closely.
