A typhoon is a powerful tropical cyclone. These storms form in the Northwestern Pacific Basin. This region is between 180 and 100 degrees East. This area accounts for almost one third of the world's tropical cyclones.

It is the most active place on Earth for these storms. Most storms happen in the area northeast of the Philippines. They can strike many different lands. The Philippines receives the most landfalls. China and Japan are also impacted by these systems.

Many specific things must happen to create a typhoon. First, the sea surface must be warm. The water needs to be at least 26.5 degrees Celsius. This warmth must reach a depth of 50 meters. The air needs high humidity in the lower levels. There must also be enough Coriolis effect to make a low pressure center. Finally, the storm needs low vertical wind shear. This means the wind does not change too much at different heights.

People have used the word typhoon for a very long time. The word may come from Chinese or Persian origins. In China, the term was used as early as 1124. Some say it means "winds which last long." In 1762, a chronicle recorded 29 different names for these storms. The term became a standard word later on. One expert, Chu Coching, helped make it the official term. He led meteorology from 1929 to 1936.

Scientists use different levels to name the strength of a storm. A tropical depression is the lowest level. If winds get faster, it becomes a tropical storm. A severe tropical storm follows that. When winds reach 118 kilometers per hour, it is a typhoon.

The Hong Kong Observatory also uses the term "super typhoon." This is for storms with winds of at least 220 kilometers per hour. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center uses different wind measurements. They look at a one-minute average for their reports.

Typhoons can happen during any month of the year. Most storms form between June and November. August is often the busiest month for these storms. They are steered by a feature called the subtropical ridge. This ridge pushes them west or northwest. Some storms curve near or east of Japan. During El Niño years, the paths of these storms can shift. This change affects which countries feel the most wind and rain.
