A tropical cyclone is a large, spinning storm system.

These storms form over warm ocean waters. The warm water gives the storm its power. Water turns into vapor and rises into the air. This moist air cools and turns into clouds and rain. This process makes the storm grow.

As the air moves, the Earth's rotation helps it spin. This spinning is called the Coriolis effect.

The storm has a calm center called an eye. Strong winds and heavy rain swirl around the eye in a spiral.

These storms have different names based on where they are. In the Atlantic Ocean, they are called hurricanes. In the Northwest Pacific, they are called typhoons. In the Indian Ocean, they are called cyclones.

Around 80 to 90 of these named storms form each year. Climate change can make these storms stronger. Warming oceans give the storms more energy to grow. This can lead to more heavy rain and flooding.
