The storm spins around a low pressure center. This center is a spot with low air pressure. The wind spins in a circle. This brings stormy weather to a large area.

We use different names for these storms. In the Atlantic, we call them hurricanes. In the Western Pacific, people call them typhoons. In other oceans, they are called cyclones. We can group storms by how strong they are. A tropical storm has winds of at least 39 mph. A hurricane has winds of 75 mph or more.

On average, 14 named storms happen each year. Seven of these become hurricanes. Three of those become major hurricanes. A major hurricane is a Category 3 or higher. Some storms even reach Category 5. These are the most powerful storms. The name Wilma holds a record for being very strong. It had the lowest pressure ever measured in the Atlantic.
