A tropical cyclone is a massive, rotating storm system. It is a warm-cored, non-frontal, synoptic-scale low-pressure system. These storms form over tropical or subtropical waters. They are characterized by a low-pressure area and a closed low-level atmospheric circulation.

The system features a spiral arrangement of thunderstorms. These thunderstorms produce heavy rain and intense squalls. A tropical cyclone is generally considered formed once mean surface winds exceed 39 miles per hour. At this stage, the storm is self-sustaining. This means it can continue to intensify without outside help.

The mechanism of a tropical cyclone relies on heat energy from the ocean. The process begins when warm ocean water evaporates into the air. This moist air rises and eventually cools to the point of saturation. As the water vapor condenses into clouds and rain, it releases energy. This energy acts as an accelerator for the storm.

As air flows inward toward the axis of rotation, the Earth's rotation causes the system to spin. This occurs because of the conservation of angular momentum. This rotation is influenced by the Coriolis effect. Because of this effect, surface winds blow counterclockwise in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere, the winds blow clockwise.

Several specific conditions are required for these storms to develop. Sea surface temperatures must be around 80 degrees Fahrenheit. There must also be low vertical wind shear surrounding the system. High humidity is necessary in the lower and middle levels of the troposphere. Additionally, there must be enough Coriolis force to develop a low-pressure center. The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) often serves as the origin point. In this broad area of low pressure, air is heated and rises in discrete parcels. These parcels create towering thunderstorms that can group into large clusters.

Tropical cyclones are known by different names depending on their location and strength. A hurricane is a strong tropical cyclone in the Atlantic or northeastern Pacific Ocean. A typhoon is a similar storm occurring in the northwestern Pacific Ocean.

In the Indian Ocean and South Pacific, they are called tropical cyclones. In the Indian Ocean, they may also be called severe cyclonic storms. A tropical storm is a stage of intensity before a system becomes a hurricane or typhoon. The term "tropical" refers to their geographical origin near the equator. The term "cyclone" refers to the circular movement of the winds.

On average, about 80 to 90 named tropical cyclones form each year worldwide. Over half of these develop hurricane-force winds of 74 miles per hour or more. Of these, 47 reach strengths higher than a tropical storm. Approximately 20 become intense tropical cyclones, which are Category 3 or higher on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Activity peaks in late summer when the temperature difference between the ocean and the upper atmosphere is greatest. Globally, May is the least active month, while September is the most active. In the Atlantic, the season peaks around September 10. The Northwest Pacific sees activity year-round, but peaks in early September.

These storms can cause significant damage, especially in coastal regions. Coastal impacts include strong winds, heavy rain, high waves, and storm surges. Tornadoes can also occur during these events.

Inland regions often suffer less wind damage, but flooding is a major concern everywhere. A cyclone draws in air from a large area. It then concentrates that moisture into a much smaller area through precipitation. This can result in extremely heavy rain for many hours or days. Such intense rainfall can lead to river flooding and overland flooding. This often overwhelms local water control structures.

Climate change is currently affecting how these storms behave. Scientists have found that warming ocean waters can increase the intensity and occurrence of cyclones. It can also increase their duration. The intensification of the water cycle is another factor linked to climate change.

Additionally, climate oscillations like El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) modulate the frequency of these storms. During El Niño years, the Atlantic may see depressed activity due to increased vertical wind shear. However, La Niña years can shift formation westward in the Pacific. This increases the threat of landfall in places like China and the Philippines.
