Cyclone

A cyclone is a massive air mass that rotates around a center of low atmospheric pressure.

These systems are defined by inward-spiraling winds that circle a zone of low pressure. In the Northern Hemisphere, these winds spin counterclockwise when viewed from above. In the Southern Hemisphere, the rotation is clockwise. This specific direction is caused by the Coriolis effect. This effect is a force resulting from the Earth's rotation. Without this balance between the pressure gradient force and the Coriolis effect, the cyclone would collapse.

Cyclones are vital to Earth's weather systems. They are also found on other planets like Mars, Jupiter, and Neptune.

Extratropical cyclones form through a process called cyclogenesis. These systems typically begin as waves in baroclinic zones. A baroclinic zone is a large region with strong temperature and humidity contrasts. As the cyclonic circulation closes and intensifies, these zones contract to form weather fronts. A front is the boundary between two air masses with different temperatures and densities. Cold fronts usually form west of the circulation center and move from west to east. They are often narrow bands of thunderstorms or severe weather. Warm fronts form east of the center and move poleward. They are often preceded by fog and stratiform precipitation.

As an extratropical cyclone matures, its structure changes significantly. The cold front typically moves faster than the warm front. This happens because the higher density air mass behind the cyclone strengthens. Eventually, the cold front catches up to the warm front. This process creates an occluded front, which wraps around the storm center. During occlusion, the warm air is pushed upward into a trough called a trowal. At this stage, the system becomes a cold core system. The life cycle of these extratropical cyclones usually lasts between 2 and 6 days. Their tracks are guided by the steering flow of the subtropical jet stream.

Tropical cyclones operate through a different mechanism known as tropical cyclogenesis. These are warm core systems that develop over warm ocean waters. They require significant thunderstorm activity to grow. The energy comes from the latent heat released during the condensation of moisture. For these storms to form, there must be sufficiently warm sea surface temperatures and low vertical wind shear. On average, 86 tropical cyclones of tropical storm intensity form globally each year. Of these, 47 reach hurricane or typhoon strength. About 20 of these become intense tropical cyclones, which are at least Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

There are several distinct types of surface-based cyclones. Extratropical cyclones exist in the middle latitudes and are connected to fronts. Subtropical cyclones are hybrids that share traits with both tropical and extratropical systems. They can form between the equator and the 50th parallel. These systems have broad wind patterns with maximum winds located far from the center. Polar lows are another unique type of small-scale, short-lived system. They are found in high latitudes over ocean areas. These systems are often called Arctic hurricanes or cold air depressions. They can be difficult to detect with standard weather reports and pose hazards to shipping.

Cyclones are known by different names depending on their location. In the Atlantic and northeastern Pacific, tropical cyclones are called hurricanes. This name comes from Huracan, an ancient Central American deity of wind. In the Indian and South Pacific oceans, they are called cyclones. In the northwestern Pacific, they are known as typhoons.

The term "cyclone" itself comes from the Greek word for circle or ring. This describes the spiraling nature of the winds. Henry Piddington, an official with the British East India Company, helped popularize the term. He published 40 papers on tropical storms between 1836 and 1855.

These powerful systems connect to many different atmospheric processes. Mesocyclones can form as warm core cyclones over land. These can lead to the formation of tornadoes. Mesocyclones can also lead to the development of waterspouts. Cyclones can also transition between different phases, such as moving from extratropical to tropical. The evolution of these vortices is complex and nonlinear. Factors like surface evaporation and moist-convection can affect their intensity. Whether they are massive hurricanes or small polar lows, they demonstrate the immense energy within our atmosphere.
