Tylosaurus was a genus of large marine lizards.

These predators lived in the oceans about 92 to 66 million years ago. This time was during the Late Cretaceous period.

Most fossils are found around the North Atlantic Ocean. This includes parts of North America, Europe, and Africa. They were part of a group called mosasaurs. These were predatory lizards that lived in the sea.

One special feature was the shape of their snout. They had an elongated, pointed nose called a rostrum. The name Tylosaurus actually means "knob lizard."

This name comes from the Latin word for knob. It also uses a Greek word for lizard. This long nose helped them move through the water. Scientists use these bones to understand how they lived.

People have found these fossils for a very long time. Native American peoples likely found them well before European settlers arrived. Some old stories from the Great Plains mention huge sea creatures. These myths might have come from seeing large fossils. In 1804, the Lewis and Clark Expedition found a fossil.

They thought it was a long fish near the Missouri River. Later, experts thought it might be a different kind of lizard.

Learning about Tylosaurus involved a famous rivalry. Two scientists, Edward Cope and Othniel Marsh, competed during the Bone Wars.

Cope first described a specimen from Kansas in 1869. He originally called it Macrosaurus proriger. Marsh later suggested the name Rhinosaurus for the same animal. Eventually, the name Tylosaurus became the most accepted name. Joseph Leidy helped move the species into this genus in 1873.

There are many different species within this group. One species is T. nepaeolicus, found near the Solomon River.

Another is T. bernardi, which was found in Belgium. Scientists also found T. ivoensis from fossils in Sweden.

In Canada, a specimen named "Omācīw" was found in Saskatchewan. This name means "hunter" in the Cree language.
