The discovery revealed over 5,000 artifacts. These items included gold jewelry, clothing, and a famous death mask. Because of this discovery, many people call him "King Tut." His reign helped restore the traditional ways of Egyptian life.

Tutankhamun's life began during the Amarna Period.

This was a time when the religion of Egypt changed. His predecessor, Akhenaten, promoted the worship of the sun disk known as Aten. Because of this, Tutankhamun was born with the name Tutankhaten. This name meant "living image of Aten." Scientists have used DNA testing to study his family history.

These tests suggest his father may have been Akhenaten or Smenkhkare. His mother is often identified as an anonymous mummy called "The Younger Lady." DNA shows his parents were likely full siblings.

Tutankhamun became king at a very young age. He was likely between eight and nine years old.

He ruled for about nine years. During his reign, the government was managed by high officials. The position of Vizier, a top advisor, was split between Upper and Lower Egypt. One principal vizier for Upper Egypt was named Usermontu. Another official named Pentju also served as a vizier. Even the man who succeeded him, Ay, may have held an informal version of this title. This structure helped manage the large Egyptian empire.

One of Tutankhamun's biggest jobs was the religious restoration.

He worked to undo the changes made during the Amarna Period. He ended the exclusive worship of Aten. Instead, he restored the traditional gods to their high positions. He made the god Amun very important again. To show this change, he and his queen changed their names. He became Tutankhamun, and she became Ankhesenamun. He recorded these religious acts on the Restoration Stela. This monument explained how he brought back the old cults.

Tutankhamun also moved the center of Egyptian power.

He moved the royal court away from the city of Amarna. He moved it back to Memphis to help run the country. This helped return Egypt to its traditional administrative style. He also started many building projects to honor the gods. At Karnak, he laid out a path of sphinxes. These statues were originally made for Akhenaten and Nefertiti. Tutankhamun gave them new heads shaped like rams. He also worked on the entrance at Luxor temple.

Tutankhamun died unexpectedly when he was about 18 years old.

His death was a major event because he was a king. For a long time, people wondered why he died so young. In 2012, researchers suggested he had malaria and a broken leg. Because he died suddenly, his royal tomb was not finished. He was buried in a smaller, non-royal tomb instead.

His death ended the royal bloodline of the Eighteenth Dynasty. He was followed by Ay and then Horemheb.

The discovery of his tomb changed how the world sees Egypt.

Some of these treasures have traveled the world in special tours. In 2025, many items were planned to move to the Grand Egyptian Museum. His life and his tomb remain a major part of history. He connects the religious shifts of the Amarna Period to the traditional era that followed.
