Howard Carter was a British archaeologist and Egyptologist. He is most famous for finding the intact tomb of King Tutankhamun. This king belonged to the 18th Dynasty of ancient Egypt.

Carter's discovery in November 1922 was a major event. It was the best-preserved pharaonic tomb ever found in the Valley of the Kings. His work changed how people understood ancient Egyptian history and culture.

Carter's interest in Egypt began during his childhood in Swaffham, Norfolk. His father was an artist and illustrator. This helped Carter develop strong artistic talents early in life. While growing up, he saw a large collection of Egyptian antiques at Didlington Hall. The owner of the hall was Lady Amherst. She noticed his skills and helped him start his career. In 1891, she helped him join the Egypt Exploration Fund (EEF).

Carter learned many professional skills through hands-on experience. At age 17, he helped record decorations in Middle Kingdom tombs at Beni Hasan. He also worked under the famous expert Flinders Petrie at Amarna in 1892. Later, he recorded wall reliefs at the temple of Hatshepsut. By 1899, he was appointed Inspector of Monuments for Upper Egypt. He was known for using modern archaeological methods. He even developed a grid-block system to search for tombs more effectively.

In 1907, Carter began a long partnership with Lord Carnarvon. Carnarvon was a wealthy man who funded many excavations. The two men worked together for sixteen years. They focused on searching the Valley of the Kings for lost tombs. Their work was interrupted by the First World War. During the war, Carter worked as a diplomatic courier and translator. He resumed his archaeological work in late 1917. However, many years passed without a major find.

By 1922, Lord Carnarvon was ready to stop funding the search. He agreed to fund just one more season of work. On November 4, 1922, a worker uncovered a stone step. This led to a doorway with royal seals.

Carter made a tiny hole in the door using a chisel. He looked inside with a candle and saw gold and ebony treasures. He famously told Carnarvon, "Yes, wonderful things!" They had found the tomb of Tutankhamun, also known as KV62.

The tomb was an incredible treasure trove. It contained over 5,000 different items. These included gilded couches, chests, thrones, and shrines.

Carter spent nearly ten years cataloging and conserving these objects. This was a very slow and careful process. Most of the items were eventually moved to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The discovery was so big that it caused "Egyptomania" around the world. Many people became obsessed with ancient Egyptian art and history.

Carter's life was not always easy. He had a hot temper and often argued with others. He had a major dispute with the Egyptian Antiquities Service in 1924. This dispute caused work to stop for nearly a year. He also faced a difficult event in 1905 called the Saqqara Affair. This was a violent confrontation between site guards and tourists. Despite these struggles, Carter received honors from Egypt. King Fuad I gave him the Order of the Nile.
