Tungsten carbide is a special material made of tungsten and carbon atoms.

It is very important in many different industries. This material is much harder than steel. In fact, it is about three times as stiff as steel.

It is also twice as dense as steel. It is almost as hard as a diamond. Because it is so tough, it can only be polished with even harder materials like diamond.

Making this material involves a few different steps. First, workers create a fine gray powder. They do this by reacting tungsten metal with carbon at very high temperatures. This heat can reach between 1,400 and 2,000 degrees Celsius.

To make a solid shape, they use a method called powder metallurgy. They mix the powder with a binder metal, usually cobalt. The mixture is pressed into a shape and then heated through sintering. During sintering, the binder melts and holds the tungsten grains together.

People have been studying this material for a long time. A scientist named Henri Moissan first made the powder in 1893.

About 20 to 25 years later, industrial production began. This happened between the years 1913 and 1918. Workers in many different jobs often just call it "carbide." This simple name is used by people who work with machines every day.

Tungsten carbide is used in many places around the world. It is used to make cutting tools for machines.

These tools can work much faster than tools made of high-speed steel. It is also used in mining to make parts for big drills. These parts help machines break through hard rock.

In some cases, it is used in armor-piercing bullets. This is because the material is very hard and very dense. It can even be used to make beautiful jewelry.

You might see tungsten carbide in your own life too. It is used in sports gear to help with grip.

For example, some bicycle tires have small carbide spikes. These spikes help tires stay on slippery ice. Hikers also use trekking poles with carbide tips. These tips help them stay steady on hard rocks. Even snowmobiles use carbide segments to help with steering on ice.
