Carbon fibers are tiny, incredibly strong threads made mostly of carbon atoms.

These fibers are special because they are very stiff and strong. They also do not change much when they get hot. Because they are so light but tough, they are used in many high-tech places. You might find them in parts for spacecraft or fast racing cars.

They are also used for everyday items like golf clubs and bicycle frames. Even though they cost more than steel, their light weight makes them worth the price.

To make these fibers, carbon atoms must be joined in a special way. The atoms bond together into crystals that line up along the length of the fiber.

This alignment makes the fiber very strong for its size. Often, thousands of these tiny filaments are bundled together into a group called a tow.

Makers can weave these tows into a fabric or mix them with other materials. For example, if you soak the fibers in plastic resin and bake them, you create a carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer. This makes a very rigid material that is great for building strong parts.

People have been working with carbon fibers for a very long time. In 1860, Joseph Swan used carbon fibers for light bulbs. Later, in 1879, Thomas Edison used bamboo or cotton threads to make filaments for his bulbs.

In 1958, Roger Bacon created high-performance fibers at a center in Cleveland, Ohio. He used rayon to make them, but they only had 20% carbon. Later, in the 1960s, Dr. Akio Shindo in Japan found a better way using a material called polyacrylonitrile, or PAN. This helped make fibers with much more carbon.

Different types of carbon fiber have different strengths and uses. Some fibers, like the T400 from Toray, have a very high tensile strength.

Others are made from petroleum pitch, which comes from oil processing. These pitch-based fibers can contain about 85% carbon and are very good at resisting bending. In the 1960s, researchers at the Royal Aircraft Establishment in the UK also developed new processes. These discoveries allowed companies like Rolls-Royce to use carbon fiber in jet engines. Even though some early engine parts had trouble with bird impacts, the technology kept improving.

Today, carbon fiber is part of many things you might see or use.

It is used in camera tripods, fishing rods, and even sailboat masts. Some engineers even add carbon fiber to asphalt on airport runways. By passing electricity through the fibers, the asphalt can stay warm enough to melt ice and snow. You can even find carbon fiber in specialized clothing, like racing gloves.

It is a truly amazing material that helps us build faster, lighter, and stronger things.
