Carbon is a very special element that can take many different shapes. These different forms are called allotropes. Even though they look different, they are all made of the same carbon atoms.

The way these atoms connect changes how the material works. Some forms are very hard, while others are soft or even hollow. Scientists use a database called SACADA to track many of these forms. There are about 500 different types of carbon shapes known today.

One famous shape is diamond. In a diamond, each carbon atom is bonded to four other carbons. This creates a strong, three-dimensional network called a tetrahedral geometry.

This tight web makes diamond the hardest known natural mineral. Because it is so strong, it is used for industrial jobs. It can be used in drill bits, saws, and grinding tools. Most diamonds are actually used for these hard jobs instead of jewelry. About 80% of mined diamonds are used for industry.

Another common form is graphite. Graphite is made of flat layers of carbon atoms. In these layers, each atom bonds to only three others. This leaves some electrons free to move around. Because these electrons can move, graphite can conduct electricity along its planes.

Graphite is also very stable. It can be used in nuclear reactors or to make heat-resistant shields. It is even used in fire seals that expand during a fire. This expansion helps stop the spread of heat and fumes.

Scientists have found many more tiny shapes in recent years. In 1985, researchers discovered buckminsterfullerenes, which are often called buckyballs. These molecules look like hollow spheres or even soccer balls.

There are also carbon nanotubes, which are shaped like tiny tubes. Another amazing form is graphene. Graphene is just a single, thin layer of graphite. It has very special electrical and thermal properties. Scientists are studying if graphene can one day replace silicon in electronics.

Carbon can also be found in space and in strange new ways. Diatomic carbon can be found in comets and certain stars.

Some carbon, called lonsdaleite, is formed when meteorites hit the Earth. The huge heat and pressure turn graphite into this special hexagonal diamond. There is also amorphous carbon, which has no regular pattern at all. This includes things like soot or coal. The world of carbon is full of endless discoveries for scientists to make.
