Silicon carbide

physical science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Silicon carbide is a very hard chemical compound. It is made of two main parts: silicon and carbon.

This material is known as a wide bandgap semiconductor. This means it can help control electricity in special ways. It is used in many tools that need to be very tough. You might find it in car brakes or even in ceramic plates for bulletproof vests.

Because it is so strong, it is also used as an abrasive. An abrasive is a rough material used for grinding or cutting.

Making silicon carbide can happen in a few different ways. One simple way is the Acheson method. In this way, workers combine silica sand and carbon in a special furnace. The furnace uses electricity to create very high heat.

This heat turns the sand and carbon into silicon carbide powder. To make high-quality single crystals, scientists use the Lely method. They heat silicon carbide powder until it turns into a gas. This gas then cools and settles into flat, flake-like crystals.

These crystals can be grown quite large for electronics.

Humans have been working with this material for a long time. Edward Goodrich Acheson is credited with making it on a large scale in 1891. He was actually trying to make artificial diamonds at the time. He found blue crystals instead and called them carborundum.

Another scientist, Henri Moissan, found it in nature. He found a tiny bit of it in a meteorite from Arizona. Because of his discovery, the natural version is called moissanite. It was named after him in 1905.

People even disputed his find because of existing saw blades.

There are many interesting facts about how this material behaves. It does not actually melt when it gets hot. Instead, it begins to sublimate near 2,700 degrees Celsius. Sublimation is when a solid turns straight into a gas.

Most silicon carbide sold today is man-made. Natural moissanite is extremely rare on Earth. It is found in tiny amounts in certain meteorites or rocks. However, silicon carbide is very common in space. It is a type of stardust found around carbon-rich stars.

You can see how silicon carbide connects to your daily life. It is used in the grip tape on skateboards to help you stay on. It is also used to make LEDs, which are tiny lights.

In the early 1900s, it was even used in the first radios. Today, it helps power electronic devices that work in very hot places. Some people even use synthetic crystals as gems in jewelry. These gems look very much like real diamonds.
