Nitride

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Nitrides are special chemical compounds made from nitrogen. Nitrogen is a common gas found in our air. In these compounds, nitrogen takes on a specific charge called an anion. These nitrides can be organic or inorganic. They can also be ionic or covalent. This means the way the atoms stick together can change. Scientists find them very interesting because they are so varied.

Making these materials can be a hard job for scientists. Nitrogen gas is not very reactive when it is cold. However, it becomes more reactive when things get hot. Scientists must find a careful balance between these two states. They must manage the low reactivity of cold gas. They also must manage the way nitrogen gas forms at high temperatures. Modern ways to make them are becoming more sophisticated every year.

Many nitrides are used to make our world work better. Some are very hard and can protect surfaces. Titanium nitride and zirconium nitride are used as thin coatings. These help industrial tools last much longer. Other types are used as lubricants to help parts slide. Hexagonal boron nitride has a layered structure like a stack of sheets. This makes it a great lubricant for high temperatures.

Some nitrides are very important for modern technology. Gallium nitride is a special material used in electronics. It is a semiconductor, which helps control electricity. This material is used to make blue light in LEDs. This discovery was so important it won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2014. Other nitrides like silicon nitride can act as insulators. This means they do not let electricity flow easily.

There are many different kinds of nitrides to explore. Lithium nitride is a bright purple-red color. It forms when lithium burns in an atmosphere of nitrogen. Some nitrides can even be dangerous to touch. Silver nitride is a contact explosive. It can detonate if a water droplet falls on it. Scientists also study nitrides to learn about how atoms bond. They use tools like NMR spectroscopy to see these tiny connections.
