Nitride

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Nitrides are chemical compounds made with nitrogen. Nitrogen is a gas found in our air. Scientists make nitrides in many ways. It is hard to make them. This is because nitrogen gas does not react easily when it is cold. It does react better when it is very hot. Scientists must find a perfect balance to make them.

Many nitrides are very useful. Some are very hard. These can be used as coatings for tools. This helps the tools last longer. Other nitrides are used in tech. Gallium nitride is a special kind. It helps make blue light in LEDs. This work won a Nobel Prize in 2014.

Some nitrides have special shapes. Boron nitride can have a layered shape. This makes it a good lubricant. A lubricant helps parts slide easily. Some nitrides can even hold hydrogen. This might help us store fuel. One nitride is a bright purple-red color. It forms when lithium burns in air. Other nitrides can be dangerous. Silver nitride can explode if you touch it.
