Unlike a skirt or a robe, they keep each leg separate. People use many different names for them depending on where they live. In North America and Australia, many people call them pants or slacks.

In Scotland, a traditional type of tartan trousers is called trews. These are still worn at special events like weddings or ceilidhs. Trousers are usually worn around the waist or hips. You might hold them up using a belt, elastic, or even suspenders.

Some styles, like jeans, are made of a strong cloth called denim. Jeans often have pockets on the sides and the back. People also wear shorts, which are like trousers but much shorter.

Some trousers have extra pockets on the legs called cargo pockets. Keeping the right fit can be a hard job. You can change the length of the legs with a hem. High-quality trousers might even have extra fabric inside the seam to make the waist larger.

These clothes have been around for a very long time. The oldest known trousers were found in the Yanghai cemetery in China.

However, the Romans eventually started wearing them because they kept people warm. They used two types called feminalia and braccae. These often started as clothes for soldiers before regular people wore them.

Throughout history, the way people wear trousers has changed. In the Middle Ages, many men in Europe wore them.

Some people even wore two layers of trousers at once. In the past, some men wore breeches instead of long trousers. Since the mid-twentieth century, women have also worn trousers more often. Today, you can find many types like khakis, chinos, or even sweatpants. Trousers are a part of life for people all over the world.
