Tritiated water

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Tritiated water is a special kind of water. It is radioactive. This means it gives off energy. It is made of tritium atoms. These atoms replace the usual hydrogen atoms in water. Some people call it super-heavy water. Pure super-heavy water is a clear liquid. It can also be corrosive. This means it can eat away at things.

This happens because of self-radiolysis. This is a way that the water breaks itself apart. The water molecules undergo beta decay. This is a process where they let out energy. This energy can break the bonds in the water. When this happens, gases like hydrogen and oxygen are made.

Scientists use this water for many jobs. They use it as a tracer. A tracer is something used to follow a path. It helps them study how water moves. It can even tell how old some wine is. It can also help study the water inside a body.

Humans can make tritiated water too. It can come from nuclear power plants. It can also come from glowing watches. If someone takes it in, they can drink clean water. This helps the body get rid of it.
