A hydrogen atom is the simplest kind of atom.

It has a center called a nucleus. This nucleus has one proton inside. A proton has a plus charge. A single electron moves around the nucleus. The electron has a minus charge. A force holds them together.

Most hydrogen is made of one type called protium. Protium is stable. It makes up almost all hydrogen in nature. There are other types called isotopes. Deuterium has one proton and one neutron. Tritium has one proton and two neutrons. Tritium is not stable. It decays over time.

Scientists use math to study these atoms. Niels Bohr made a famous model. He said electrons stay in certain paths. These paths are called stationary states. An electron can jump between these paths. It gains or loses power when it jumps.

Today, we use the Schrödinger equation to understand atoms. This math shows where an electron might be. We call this the wavefunction. It tells us the chance of finding an electron in a certain spot. This is how the tiny world really works.
