Hydrogen atom

The hydrogen atom is the simplest kind of atom in the universe.

It is very important because it makes up about 75% of the mass of all visible matter. A single hydrogen atom is electrically neutral. This means its total charge is zero. It has one tiny, positive proton sitting in its center, called the nucleus. A single negative electron orbits around that nucleus. A force called the Coulomb force pulls the electron toward the proton. This force keeps the electron bound to the center so the atom stays together.

Hydrogen can exist in a few different forms called isotopes. The most common type is called protium. It is stable and makes up 99.985% of all natural hydrogen. Protium has just one proton and one electron. Another type is called deuterium. It is also stable and contains one proton and one neutron. It is used in things like nuclear reactors. A third type is called tritium. Tritium has one proton and two neutrons. It is not stable and decays over time.

Scientists have worked for a long time to understand how these atoms work. In 1909, Ernest Rutherford showed that atoms have a dense, positive nucleus. This discovery raised big questions about how electrons stay in orbit. If they followed old rules of physics, they would spiral into the nucleus and collapse. In 1913, Niels Bohr created a new model to explain this. He said electrons can only exist in certain paths called stationary states. Electrons do not lose energy while they are in these specific orbits.

Bohr's model showed that electrons jump between these orbits. When an electron jumps, it gains or loses a specific amount of energy. This explains why atoms emit light at certain frequencies. Later, Arnold Sommerfeld improved this idea. He suggested that orbits could be shaped like ellipses instead of perfect circles. This helped explain even more details about the light atoms give off. Eventually, the full rules of quantum mechanics were developed to solve the remaining mysteries.

Today, we use the Schrödinger equation to describe the hydrogen atom. This math tells us about the electron's wavefunction. A wavefunction is a way to find the probability of where an electron might be. Instead of a perfect circle, the electron exists in a cloud of possibilities. The most likely place to find the electron is at the Bohr radius. This is known as the ground state, or the lowest energy level. This math helps us understand all the bigger living things and objects in our world.
