Semiheavy water

physical science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Most water is made of light parts. Some water is a bit heavier. We call this semiheavy water.

Water is made of atoms. Most water uses a light atom called protium. Semiheavy water uses one heavier atom called deuterium. This atom has an extra neutron. A neutron is a tiny part inside an atom. This extra part makes the water weigh more.

Semiheavy water is common in nature. About one in 3,200 water molecules is semiheavy water. This is much more common than heavy water. Heavy water only happens once in 41 million molecules.

It is hard to find semiheavy water alone. It likes to swap parts with other water. This is called hydrogen exchange. Because of this, the water stays mixed. You cannot keep it in a pure liquid form.

People can make water with more deuterium. They use ways like distillation. This is a way to separate liquids. They can also use electrolysis. This uses electricity to change the water.
