Water is a very special substance. It is the most common thing on Earth's surface.

It can be a liquid, a solid called ice, or a gas called water vapor.

Water is made of tiny parts called molecules. Each molecule has two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom. These molecules stick together using hydrogen bonds. These bonds are like tiny magnets that hold the parts close.

Because of these bonds, water has many unique traits.

One trait is that ice is less dense than liquid water. This means ice is lighter and floats on top.

This is very important for life. In winter, ice forms on top of lakes. This layer of ice acts like a blanket. It keeps the water below from freezing solid. This helps fish and other life stay safe.

Water also has a high heat capacity. This means it can hold a lot of heat. This helps keep the Earth's climate steady.

It also works well as a solvent. This means it can dissolve many things, like salts. We call it the "solvent of life."
